Growing Community Leaders in Monteverde

Las Hormiguitas empowers youth to see themselves as agents of change. It nurtures emotional, social, and civic growth in a safe and inclusive environment—laying the foundation for a more connected and resilient Monteverde.

Every summer, for the past 12 years, the Monteverde Institute has hosted Campamento Las Hormiguitas. This vibrant week-long day camp brings together youth aged 12 to 15 from the seven communities of Monteverde. More than just a camp,

Las Hormiguitas is where fun meets purpose, and where young people begin their journey as community leaders.

Campers engage in a wide range of activities designed to foster teamwork, creativity, and civic responsibility. From tree climbing and ziplining to painting recycling centers, planting native plants, and visiting elders, each day is filled with meaningful experiences that connect youth to their environment and their neighbors.

One of the camp’s most powerful outcomes is the way it bridges communities. Many participants meet peers from neighboring towns for the first time, forming friendships that last well beyond the camp. As they grow, many return as camp leaders, guiding the next generation after completing a three-weekend leadership training for those aged 16 to 20.

Together, we’re cultivating the next generation of leaders — one camper at a time.
