Where Butterflies Meet the Sidewalk: Milo Coles on Place and Belonging

What makes a place unforgettable? An intern’s answer, painted on the pavement in Monteverde.

What makes a place unforgettable? How does where we live shape who we become? What stories are hidden in the landscapes around us?

At the Monteverde Institute, we ask these questions because the place we work in is not a backdrop. The cloud forest, the neighbors, the paths we walk every day are part of the work. So we put them to Milo Coles, an intern who has spent these months with us in Monteverde.

Milo answered the way he knows best. He wrote us a few lines, and he painted a hopscotch on a sidewalk, a mural that follows the metamorphosis of a butterfly. Here is what he wrote, exactly as he sent it.

Everyplace is a reflection of our shared life experience and beliefs.

From our art to our architecture to the music, it is a manifestation of our imagination and life experience.

Every place also has the ability to transform how we look at the world.

It feels hard to know where one starts and the other begins.

I’ve always associated transformation with butterflies, that are inspiration to me.

Which is one reason I feel very grateful to participate in this project.

Just as a butterfly transforms in the crystal.

Every place we visit can transform us in a sense.

The concept of this mural reflects much of the beauty I’ve recognized being here in Costa Rica.

I’ve found the people here to be incredibly joyful, generous, and playful.

Just as I will inevitably be transformed by my time here, I hope that each person not only learns more about butterflies but is also transformed through play for just a moment.

— Milo Coles

Milo says it is hard to know where a place ends and a person begins. We think that is the point. A place gets into the people who live in it, and the people leave their mark on the place, even if the mark is a set of painted squares on a sidewalk.

The next time you walk by, take a turn. Hop through the stages of a butterfly’s life, and notice what the place is telling you. Then come be part of it: visit the Monteverde Institute, and tell us where the place has changed you.
