Salud Comunitaria 2018
El Programa de Salud Comunitaria, tiene la meta de motivar a las familias a producir o consumir lo que se produce localmente; e igualmente que las empresas y negocios compren y apoyen la producción de la zona de Monteverde.
The Community Health Program has the goal of motivating families to produce or consume what is produced locally; and also that companies and businesses buy and support the production of the Monteverde area.
¡Producir y comprar productos locales orgánicos, beneficia su salud!
El Programa de Salud Comunitaria, tiene la meta de motivar a las familias a producir o consumir lo que se produce localmente; e igualmente que las empresas y negocios compren y apoyen la producción de la zona de Monteverde. De esa manera podemos promover la producción sostenible que beneficia la salud de quienes consumimos estos productos, así como el ambiente y la economía de productores y negocios que venden alimentos de estas huertas orgánicas.
Alianza… En el 2018, avanzamos en alianza con Hotel Belmar se desarrollaron talleres de huertas orgánicas, impartidos por su experto en agricultura sostenible Gerardo Calderón, así como el apoyo de Richard Garro del Departamento de Sostenibilidad. Con estos talleres buscamos difundir el conocimiento, las técnicas y experiencias de agricultores y expertos/as, para que más y más personas-familias produzcan en sus huertas orgánicas. Es uno de los caminos para garantizar la seguridad alimenticia en el Distrito.
El año pasado ejecutamos seis talleres….
Mis primeros pasos en la producción de huertas caseras: como iniciar una huerta orgánica.
Creación de Huertas Caseras bio-Intensivas (tradicional- suelo)
Manejo de Desechos orgánicos por medio de compostaje: importancia de los micro organismos y proceso de preparación.
Huertas Orgánicas y Control de Plagas: abono foliar y bio-controladores orgánicos.
Creando Equilibrio: relación entre nutrición, salud de la planta y salud humana.
Gastronomia Sostenible: explorando diferentes maneras de preparar alimentos saludables y producidos localmente.
Algo de lo que Aprendimos:
“(…) Debemos cambiar un poco la mentalidad sobre quê entendemos como plagas y enfermedades antes de intervenir en una huerta, porque si queremos erradicar totalmente insectos que se alimenten o micro organismos que se alimenten de las plantas, vamos a tener una batalla casi que a muerte con la naturaleza, porque en la naturaleza debe existir todo y debe existir un equilibrio”. Producing and buying organic local products, benefits your health!
The Community Health Program has the goal of motivating families to produce or consume locally; but also that our companies and businesses buy and support the production of the Monteverde area. In this way we can promote sustainable production that benefits the health of our families, the environment and the economy of producers and businesses that sell food from local organic gardens.
Alliance ... In 2018, we partnered with Hotel Belmar to provide a series of organic garden workshops. These were taught by the expert in sustainable agriculture, Gerardo Calderón, with support of Richard Garro of the Department of Sustainability. With these workshops we seek to spread the knowledge, techniques and experiences of farmers, so that more and more people-families produce organic vegetables in their gardens. It is one of the ways to ensure food safety in the District.

My first steps in the production of home gardens: how to start an organic garden.
Creation of Bio-Intensive Homegardens (traditional- soil)
Management of organic waste through composting: importance of micro organisms and preparation process.
Organic Vegetables and Pest Control: foliar fertilizer and organic bio-controllers.
Creating Balance: relationship between nutrition, plant health and human health.
Sustainable Gastronomy: exploring different ways to prepare healthy and locally produced foods.
Some of what we learned:

If we want to completely eradicate insects or micro organisms that feed on plants, we are going to have a battle almost to death with nature. In nature, everything exists and must exist in balance ". Parque Recreativo * San Luis * Recreational Park
San Luis decidió construir un parque. Que se complemente como una oportunidad recreativa adicional.

La recreación y los espacios de encuentro social son una necesidad para el sano desarrollo de las comunidades. En Monteverde es usual escuchar que la falta de oportunidades de recreación para las familias, es una limitación que afecta nuestra comunidad. Ciertamente las condiciones de vida actuales, exigen ofrecer más y diversas alternativas recreativas a la población en general.
A través de un parque recreativo se puede ofrecer oportunidades como: recreación familiar, sana diversión, fomento a la salud física y emocional, encuentro comunitario, compartir con respecto y armonía.
San Luis decidió construir un parque. Que se complemente como una oportunidad recreativa adicional, a las otras que ya existen administradas por la comunidad como: La red de senderos del Sendero Pacífico, la Plaza de fútbol, el Centro Educativo Cultural.
Este parque recreativo San Luis se construye en Finca La Bella, de manera que en muchas formas es un proyecto colaborativo. Más recientemente, se tomó la decisión de disponer de un área de 1500 metros de esta finca para construir el parque, ubicado muy estratégicamente al lado del Centro Educativo Cultural y muy céntrico para la comunidad.

La planificación del uso del espacio se realizó con el apoyo del programa de Futuros Sostenibles del IMV, y entre otras cosas incluirá: Áreas de estar con mesas y bancas, senderos internos, área de jardín, área con árboles nativos y frutales. Así como, graderías construidas con piedra, muro de llantas para jugar y como retén de suelo. Juegos como tobogán, carrusel, espacio para juegos tradicionales. Para su construcción, se ha tratado de reutilizar la mayor cantidad posible de materiales(ej llantas) y otros materiales de la región (ej piedra).
Pero, y el dinero para hacerlo? Es la pregunta que usualmente viene de primero.......No hay excusa. Si tiene el propósito y personas dispuestas a lograrlo se hace. Así se ha avanzado significativamente con aportes de mano de obra, materiales, maquinaria, diseños, fondos etc.
Perseverancia, trabajo, alianzas son parte de la receta en este exitoso proyecto!!!

Community Park: A recreational Opportunity for the Community.

For a healthy community development it’s important to have spaces for recreation and social gatherings. In Monteverde it’s common to hear about the lack of recreation opportunities for families, and this is a limitation that has affected our community. Clearly current lifestyles demand to have a more diverse offer of recreative alternatives for the general population.
A recreational park offers opportunities such as: family entertainment, healthy amusement, promotion of healthy lifestyles, community encounters, respectful sharing and harmony.
San Luis decided to build a park that complements other recreational opportunities such as: the Pacific Pathway Network, the soccer field, and the Cultural Education Center.
This recreational park is being built in Finca la Bella, so in many ways it’s a collaborative project. Recently, the decision was made to use 1500 m (4900 ft.) of this farm’s area to build the park, located strategically next to the Cultural Education Center, and in a very centric location for the community.

The space management plan was made with support from the Sustainable Futures Program of the Monteverde Institute, the finished park will include: sharing spaces with tables and chairs, paths, open areas, and native plant gardens and fruit trees. It also includes stone bleachers, a recycled tire wall that can be used for climbing, a slide, a carrousel, and a space for playing Costa Rican traditional games. For its construction we tried to use recycled material as much as possible (ex. tires and metal pipes) and materials from the location (ex. rocks).
But, what about the money to build it? ---This is usually the first question people have, but in reality there is no excuse. If you have the goal and the people supporting it, it’s possible. We have managed to get a lot done with volunteers, donations of materials, designs, funds, etc.
Our perseverance, work and partnerships are part of the recipe to this successful project!

Monteverde in Motion / Monteverde en Movimiento
Monteverde in Motion, one of the newer projects of the Monteverde Institute, is a project that aims to combat chronic health disease in marginalized populations by creating greater capacity to organize and engage in physical activities. Both locations (San Luis and Monteverde) get an active group, mainly women who get together to do exercise and share. We are currently offering sumba and yoga classes. The fruits are paying off, many participants are talking about feeling better physically and psychologically, it has been an important get together opportunity. /// El nuevo programa de Monteverde en Movimiento del Instituto Monteverde esta enfocado a combatir problemas de salúd en poblaciones marginadas. Actualmente se encuentra llena de participants en ambas locaciones donde se imparte: Monteverde y San Luis. Estamos ofreciendo clases de sumba y yoga. En general los resultados hasta el momento se mantienen positivas ya que tenemos participantes hablando de como el programa las ha hecho sentir mejor física y sicológicamente y de lo importante que es como punto de encuentro.
